Iron (II) Sulfate (FeSO4.xH2O), Purity: > 98%

Description

A group of salts with the formula Fe SO4·xH2O are referred to as iron(II) sulfate or ferrous sulfate. The most prevalent form of these compounds is the heptahydrate (x = 7), however there are other possible values for x. In addition to industrial uses, the hydrated form is used in medicine to treat or prevent iron deficiency. The most prevalent form of this material is the blue-green heptahydrate, which is a hydrate with seven molecules of water. It has been known since ancient times as copperas and green vitriol (vitriol is an archaic name for sulfate). The same paramagnetic aquo complex, [Fe(H2O)6]2+, with an octahedral molecular geometry, is produced when all of the iron(II) sulfates dissolve in water.

Applications

Iron(II) sulfate is preferred in iron air battery studies. It is also marketed as ferrous sulfate, a soil amendment used to bring extremely alkaline soil down to a pH where plants can absorb the nutrients. It is used to treat iron chlorosis in gardening. Concrete, as well as some limestones and sandstones, can be stained a yellow-rust color using ferrous sulfate. Woodworkers apply a silvery color to maple wood by soaking it in ferrous sulfate solutions. Another helpful reagent for identifying fungi is green vitriol.
