Scandium(III) oxide, Sc2O3, or scandia, is a high melting rare earth oxide. Scandium oxide powder is the raw material for scandium metal. It is a lightweight refractory oxide. It comes from several sources including minerals, certain uranium tailings and some phosphate ores. Scandium oxide is an insulator with a band gap of 6.0 eV. Scandium oxide powder is used in high-temperature systems (for its resistance to heat and thermal shock), electronic ceramics, and glass composition (as a helper material). Besides, it can be used in the production of high intensity "stadium" lights, high-temperature systems (for scandium oxide's resistance to heat and thermal shock), electronic ceramics, and glass composition (as a helper material). Besides, scandium oxide is suitable for the high index component of UV, AR and bandpass coatings. Also, it is used as additives in Samarium-Cobalt Magnets, in applications in glass, solid oxide fuel cell. In addition, it is also used to make scandium-aluminum master alloy.
