Gadolinium Oxide (Gd2O3) Powder

Gadolinium Oxide (Gd2O3) Powder

Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) is a member of rare earth metal oxide and the most available form of gadolinium. This material is also known as gadolinia. Gd2O3 is found in two different crystal forms; cubic and monoclinic. Similar to other rare earth oxide materials Gd2O3 is insoluble in water and highly soluble in the acid environment. This material possesses good thermal stability, low phonon energy, large optical band gap (5.4 eV) and lower lasing threshold. The high value of the spin magnetic moment is utilized in magnetic resonance imaging while x-ray absorbing properties are utilized in x-ray computed biomedical devices. Gd2O3 is a good host material for several different dopants such as Eu3+, Er3+ and Yb3+ ions for luminescent material applications. Gd2O3 is also used as a catalyst for the dimerization of many organic compounds, an additive in UO2 fuel rods for nuclear reactors, and additives in ceramics.
