Titanium Carbide (TiC) Nanoparticles
Titanium carbide (TiC) is one of the important transition metal carbides. This material has a cubic crystal structure and nanoparticles of TiC are usually in the form of black powder. TiC offers excellent intrinsic properties such as high electrical conductivity, low density, chemical robustness high elastic modulus, abrasion and wear resistance,low coefficient of thermal expansion, and catalytic activity. These intrinsic properties are further enhanced in nanosized TiC particles due to higher surface area and high electron transfer rate. The high melting point of TiC nanoparticles is around 3200°C. The electrical resistivity of TiC is around 68 μΩ.cm while elastic modulus is around 451 GPa. Interesting properties of TiC nanoparticles are utilized in various different applications such as;
- High porous filters for aggressive liquids and gasses,
- CO2 capture,
- Hard coatings,
- Wear-resistant lubricating films,
- Biosensors,
- Drug delivery systems,
- Electrode material for catalytic determination of H2O2,
- Photocatalytic and electrocatalytic applications.
