Iron (III) Chloride (FeCl3), Purity: > 99%

Description

Formula FeCl3(H2O)x represents the group of inorganic compounds referred to as iron (III) chloride. These compounds, which are also known as ferric chloride, are among the most significant and prevalent iron compounds. They come in hydrated and anhydrous forms, both of which are hygroscopic. Iron in the +3 oxidation state is present in them. All forms of the derivative are weak oxidizers, but the anhydrous form is a Lewis acid. It is employed as an etchant for metals and as a water purifier.

Applications

The production of drinking water and sewage treatment are the two main uses of iron(III) chloride. Ferric chlorides function as coagulants and flocculants by creating widely distributed networks of Fe-O-Fe-containing materials. Additionally, they are employed as a leaching agent in chloride hydrometallurgy, such as in Elkem's Silgrain process, which produces Si from FeSi. However, iron is preferred as the cathode material in air batteries.
